Alex Ovechkin Repeats as D.C. Sportsman of the Year

ARLINGTON, VA. – Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin was honored for the second consecutive year as D.C. Sportsman of the Year at SneakerBall VI, held Tuesday night at the National Building Museum in downtown Washington, D.C. The Capitals took home two more awards as well, with vice president and general manager George McPhee named sports executive of the year and Ovechkin earning the award for best play for his playoff goal against the New York Rangers.

Last season, Ovechkin led the league in goals (56) for the second year in a row, earning the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, as well as the Hart Trophy (media vote) and Lester B. Pearson Award (players’ vote) as the league’s most valuable player. He became the league’s first back-to-back MVP since Dominik Hasek in 1997 and ’98. Ovechkin led the league in points per game (1.39), shots (528) and power-play points (46). His 110 points in 79 games ranked second in the league, and his goal total was 10 more than any other player.

McPhee was honored in a fan vote for sports executive of the year after leading the Capitals to their second consecutive Southeast Division championship and their first playoff series victory since 1998.

Ovechkin won play of the year for his playoff goal against the Rangers in which he maneuvered around two players and scored with another taking him down to the ice. Among the other plays nominated was Ovechkin’s regular-season goal against the Montreal Canadiens and Semyon Varlamov’s sprawling save against Sidney Crosby in the playoffs.

SneakerBall is the only black tie and sneakers gala that annually celebrates the best of sports in the Greater Washington, D.C., region. The event is organized to benefit the Greater Washington Sports Alliance Foundation, which is made up of six local charities and creates avenues for corporate philanthropy to enhance the region’s youth sports programs and facilities.

SneakerBall is one of Washington, D.C.’s signature galas, held at the National Building Museum with over 1,000 attendees, more than 50 professional athletes and Olympians, the Greater Washington sports franchise ownership groups, leaders of the region’s business community and the Sports Alliance’s charitable partners. Joining Ovechkin and McPhee in attendance Tuesday night were Capitals Eric Fehr, Mike Green, Brooks Laich and Shaone Morrisonn.

DC Sports Dynasty Rankings – Nov.

1. D.C. United

- With 4 MLS Titles and 2 US Open Cup Titles, D.C. United is easily the most successful franchise in the area since it was established in 1995. They are now in search of a new coach to return them back to glory.

2. Washington Capitals

- They're coming off back-to-back Southeast Division Titles and with a core of young talented players, they are the franchise that is most likely to bring a championship and perhaps even a dynasty to the D.C. area. The big question is whether these young players want to be the best in the game, or whether they are more concerned about where they are going out after the game.

3. Washington Redskins

- If championships were determined by the amount of money spent on free agents, then the Redskins would have cases full of them. However, they're not and D.C.'s football franchise is the epitome of mediocrity. Too much talent to be bad, but not enough chemistry and depth to succeed. Until they hire a real general manager this team will go nowhere.

4. Washington Wizards

- The Wizards have only one championship in the history of their franchise. Actually they have none because they were the Bullets when they won theirs back in 1978. Their hopes for the 2009-10 season rest on the health of Gilbert Arenas. Cross your fingers.

5. Washington Nationals

- Why does D.C. have a baseball team again? Another poorly managed franchise, a non-existent fan base, and the worst record in the league put them last among D.C. sports teams.
